Since the 1930’s when the Gracie Family began the practice and promotion of Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Brazil up until the first UFC in the early 1990’s. Most people had no clue about the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu Jistu until Royce Gracie the son of Bjj Pioneer and Legend Helio Gracie competed and captured the first Ultimate Fighting Championship by clearly dominating fighters of all martial arts disciplines despite their size and weight. Once people witnessed how Royce efficiently overcame his opponents, the interest and desire to learn and train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has skyrocketed with no signs of it ever slowing down.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an martial art that focuses mostly on the ground or within the grappling range. From the ground, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner positions his body to create angles against his opponent that isolate the opponent’s weaker body part for an attack. Utilizing this concept the BJJ practitioner can use his whole body to attack this weak body part instead of using his whole body to resist an attacker’s full attack. By isolating the weak body part one may have numerous attack options. Example move to an angle to expose your opponent’s neck where you can apply choke holds, or isolate a body joint to attack arm and leg joints with such techniques as arm locks, or leg locks. If a smaller opponent of 120 lbs positions himself to attack the elbow joint of an opponent say 250 lbs. The bigger opponent’s joint cannot withstand the full weight of 125 lbs, thus rendering him to submit or have his joint broken.
